Synopsis
Handsome, from rundown suburbs, Roman, aged twenty, unemployed with a child of 20 days and the mother of the latter to support, Davide spends a day looking for work, finds a somewhat shady one, is cheated, steals a ring from a dead and, to the mother-child who questions him on where the money comes from, he replies: "I didn't hurt a living soul."
Inspired by the "Roman Tales" (1954) and "New Roman Tales" (1959) by Alberto Moravia, the film belongs for better or for worse to Pasolini and Bolognini more than to Moravia. The moral of the story is of Catholic cut (absolution in view of the fulfillment of the elementary duties, even if late), but doesn't weigh much because the film has a mild and elegant grace.
Shortened to 92 minutes after the release. (Morandini)
