Synopsis
In a changing world, a young man is introduced to an ancient tradition in the first feature film from writer and director Toshifumi Matsushita. Kunturi (Christian Huaygua) is thirteen years old and growing up in the Salar de Uyuni section of Bolivia, where many families still earn their living by harvesting salt from the beds of the nearby salt-water lake and using it to barter for staples on the "Ruta de la Sal." Following a familial loss, Kunturi is deemed mature enough to join his father Sauci (Francisco Gutierrez) for the annual three month journey along the salt route. For Kunturi, this isn't just a chance to bond with his father but a voyage into the outside world, and as Kunturi and Sauci make their way across Bolivia, the youngster learns some valuable lessons about life as sees a criminal banished from his village, mourns with a family who has lost their father, falls in love with a girl his age and joins the raucous crowds at a carnival. El Regalo de la Pachamama (aka Pachamama) received its North American premiere at the 2008 ~Montreal World Film Festival.
