- Synopsis
- In film Director Dominique de Rivaz's first feature, Mein Name ist Bach, we see the brilliant composer and organist Johann Sebastian Bach complete the long journey from his home in Leipzig to Potsdam.
The year is 1747, and the 65 year old genius is ageing rapidly, losing his sight and nearing the end of his life. Friedemann Bach, 30, Johann's eldest son accompanies his father. Friedemann, cursed with a self-destructive and rebellious nature, is also a brilliant organist. They have come to Potsdam to attend the christening of old Bach's first grandson, Adam.
Adam is the son of Emanuel, age 28, and his young wife Joanna. Emanuel, Bach's second son, is harpsichordist at the Royal Prussian Court, ruled by the provocative young King Frederick II of Prussia. The bad feeling that erupts between the young king and the composer is almost instantaneous. As soon as the old man arrives, exhausted by his journey, the arrogant young Frederick demands that Bach should immediately improvise one of the King's own compositions. Bach, exhausted by his journey, angrily refuses.- Awards
