- Synopsis
- Pioneer of the essay film style, enigmatic French auteur Chris Marker (La Jetée, Sans Soleil) visited Israel in the late 1950s. Turning his camera on the fledgling state, the resulting documentary Description of a Struggle won the Golden Bear at the 1961 Berlin Festival, but has rarely been seen since. Co-produced and originally distributed by Wim Van Leer of the Jerusalem Cinematheque, the film examines the struggle of the Israeli people to come to terms with their new identity, Jewish life in the kibbutzim and the treatment of minorities in the new state.
