Action. Drama. Thriller
Doc McCoy (Steve McQueen) has been granted parole. The catch is that Sheriff Beynon expects a small favor from McCoy for his generosity: robbing another bank! Beynon does not really intend to let McCoy walk away after the heist and neither does co-robber Rudy Butler, but stopping Doc proves a trifle difficult.

"Brutal but hugely entertaining."
"A big, glossy, impersonal mechanical toy. It's like one of those devices for executive desks, with the stainless steel balls on the strings: It functions with great efficiency but doesn't accomplish anything. (...) Rating: ★★ (out of 4)"
"Peckinpah's own control of the escalating frenzy is masterly; this is one of his coldest films, but a great thriller."
"Sam Peckinpah directed in imitation of Sam Peckinpah; it's a mechanical job, embellished with a vivacious, erotic subplot involving Al Lettieri and Sally Struthers."·
"The vivid direction and lightning pace make the film completely fascinating"
"'The Getaway' has several things going for it: Sam Peckinpah's hard-action direction (...) and Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw as stars." |
