Ozploitation is a term used to designate certain Australian films from the early 1970s and the 1980s that emerged during the boom of the exploitation subgenre (low-budget sexploitation, horror, comedy, and action films). The movement is considered to have begun after the introduction of the R rating in Australia in 1971, the same year that marks the start of the Australian New Wave. Ozploitation encompasses a wide range of genres, from sexploitation and biker films to horror and even martial arts. The origin of the term “ozploitation” is attributed to the 2008 documentary Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation!, which explores ozploitation films made during the Australian New Wave. The documentary includes interviews with numerous figures associated with ozploitation, as well as with fans of the genre, including American director Quentin Tarantino, who coined the phrase “aussiesploitation,” later shortened to “ozploitation” by director Mark Hartley.
