Media Author Review
United Kingdom
Telegraph
"There’s something ever-so-chic, a touch too manicured about the film’s despondency, and only rare moments land to touch us, especially. But it’s a gentle, genial watch (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Variety
"It’s an entirely different challenge to write and direct a smart, sensitive original feature in which you also play the lead character — a feat Levy deftly achieves with New Year’s tearjerker 'Good Grief'"
United States
rogerebert.com
"A modest study of the impact of loss that pushes a few buttons harder than it should and fails to fill out its ensemble equally (...) Rating: ★★ (out of 4)"
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"Levy has made a first feature that’s a glossy drama of love and loss and the restorative power of friendship. But it’s more earnest than affecting"
United States
Deadline
"It is just promising enough to make us look forward to where [Dan Levy] goes next. The guy is a quadruple threat and an assured talent"
United States
Chicago Sun-Times
"A showcase of sadness, humor and beauty (...) warm weeper set in London and Paris (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 4)"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"[It] is well-intentioned but bogged down by artificial dialogue and unfunny jokes (...) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"
United States
The Playlist
"[It] arguably doesn’t quite get there in the end, but there is a promising sense of possibility for what the future could hold for Levy as a filmmaker next
Canada
Screen Rant
"What results in 'Good Grief' isn't exactly original or revelatory, but it does hold moments of genuine heart, partially because of the excellent cast (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
IndieWire
"A sensitive but almost fatally self-absorbed death drama that has much to say and little to feel"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"A crisp, bittersweet tale of loss and friendship (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
Empire
"It’s never quite as satisfying an experience as 'Schitt’s Creek' — but thanks especially to a sparky trio of actors, Daniel Levy’s directorial debut is strong when it comes to the heartache of grief and the importance of friends (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
The Times
"Levy’s character work is truly horrible, and he constructs an entire London and Paris-set rom-com around three of the most odious, navel-gazing nincompoops in the genre (...) Rating: ★ (out of 5)"
United States
Los Angeles Times
"[It] may not fully satisfy as a heart-and-soul affair, but it brews a desire to see more of what we know Levy can offer"
United States
Paste Magazine
"A heartfelt, sometimes laborious exploration of life after loss"
United States
The Wrap
"While not offering anything particularly surprising or challenging in its take on the unpredictable shadow of loss, 'Good Grief' delivers plenty of heart (...) Rating: ★★½ (out of 4)"
United States
The New York Times
"It’s as if the familiar madcap beats have been wrapped around a drama, and the result is somehow light-handed yet deft and authentic in its treatment of grief’s long tail"
United States
Decider
"[It] could be sharper, crisper and funnier, like the script needs another draft. But as it stands, it's tender and amusing enough to warrant a watch"
United States
Collider
"While it's a cozy and enjoyable enough watch with decent performances, [it] is too middling to be memorable"
United States
Ready Steady Cut
"A well-crafted, well-written, and well-executed piece of film that you can watch again and again —especially when you need a little uplift in life (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"Moments of sharp, sincere insight amidst the schmaltz"
Ireland
Irish Independent
"[It] has honourable intentions, and while it lacks the spit and grit that might have kept it on the ground, there may be interesting things to come from Daniel Levy"
