Black Beauty

Drama A teenager grieving over the loss of her parents bonds with Beauty (Kate Winslet voice) a horse who was taken away from her family. The story is told from the perspective of the horse, and it takes inspiration from the 1877 novel 'Black Beauty: His Grooms and Companions, the Autobiography of a Horse' by Anna Sewell, but set in a modern timeline.

"While Winslet’s presence is always welcome, the voiceover that blankets the film proves tediously redundant, failing to enliven this dramatically flat production."
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"Like Anna Sewell’s original novel, this film’s heart is very much in the right place (...) 'Black Beauty' gives a great yarn a good exercise."

"It’s paced like an old nag that won’t pick up the pace no matter how much you dig your heels into its ribs and whip its hindquarters"
United States

"[This] adaptation of the classic story pulls at the heartstrings, but its episodic feel keeps it from galloping along with ease."
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"Fundamentally there’s something pretty uninspired and corporate about the way this film is presented, more like motion-capture than real humans and horses (…) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"

"This film makes a neat addition to the streamer's library, offering something nice and enjoyable for the whole clan"

The New York Times
"A melodrama in need of rougher edges (...) The novel’s mustang spirit diminishes into a ho-hum horse movie."
United States
rogerebert.com
"This might just be the wish of a former horse rider, but I’d much rather spend more time with Black Beauty than with Jo or any of the other human characters in her path (…) Rating: ★★ (out of 4)"
United States
Common Sense Media
"This film does an excellent job of capturing the tone and spirit of Anna Sewell's book (...) Kids will be wholly captivated by the movie"

"While its equine star fares well enough, the two-footed characters never really get out of the starting gate."
United States
New York Post
"Disney’s remake is a heavy-handed tear-jerker (…) Rating: ★★½ (out of 4)"
