Kinds of Kindness

Drama Fable in the form of a triptych that tells three stories: that of a trapped man who tries to take control of his own life; that of a policeman terrified because his wife, who had disappeared at sea, has returned and looks like someone else; and that of a woman determined to find someone with a special gift, destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.
Media Author Review
United States
Variety
" This long, scaldingly original film enthralls even as it frustrates, defying conventional logic while presenting an absurdist riff on modern society. It’s never boring, and yet, Lanthimos’ outré sensibility demands a special brand of patience from viewers"
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"It may not be as thematically cohesive on a first watch as some audiences will wish for, but the longer you mull it over the more the pieces of the puzzle begin to fit and the common threads start to emerge"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"The effect of it all is elegant and overwhelmingly stylish (...) It feels heavier and longer than I expected. Yet absence and loss is perhaps the whole point (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Deadline
"Puzzling, brilliant and, in all honesty, not easy to like. What is this teasingly unfathomable filmmaker telling us? We may never know, any more than we will find out why RMF is a marked man (...) That in itself is more than enough food for thought"
United States
The Wrap
"[It] is an oversized gift from a delightfully diseased imagination, bracing and quietly assaultive in ways that can get under your skin"
United States
The Playlist
"Along with the actors’ collective efforts, it stands as another compelling work from an auteur willing to push buttons and make daring choices (...) A deceptively dense piece of work filled with moments that articulate the complexity of the human condition"
United Kingdom
Telegraph
"Mind-bendingly brilliant (...) It’s a treat to watch Stone and this great ensemble cast navigate different bizarre scenarios (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Vulture
"It can be a bit exhausting (...) but we can feel the director’s excitement. He’s fully back in his sandbox"
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"Visually, and technically, a stripped-back Yorgos Lanthimos film is a pleasure to watch"
United States
Entertainment Weekly
"Instead of joie de vivre, watching 'Kinds of Kindness' requires a certain kind of cinematic patience — and if you do make it through, you might be left wondering, what was it all for?"
Hong Kong
South China Morning Post
"Looking at humanity in all its weirdness, 'Kinds of Kindness' is a baffling film to take in (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
The Times
"Sophisticated writing and perfect performances (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Rolling Stone
"[It] is weird, wild, and way more than the sum of its f-cked-up parts"
United States
The Film Stage
"This is a Jesse Plemons showcase, the actor putting his instinct for the screen on full display across three heavily depicted characters. Lanthimos has put together another dark, well-crafted delight, if not a slightly more forgettable one"
United States
The Daily Beast
"The message of 'Kinds of Kindness' is that to win the affection of their desires, humans will do the unspeakable and therefore are selfish and unredeemable. It’s great"
United Kingdom
BBC
"His fans will be intoxicated by this triple shot of pure, unfiltered Lanthimos (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
Ireland
Irish Times
"The longest and weakest film from Yorgos Lanthimos is not really a film at all (...) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
Time Out
"Spiky, darkly funny anti-crowdpleaser (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
London Evening Standard
"Although it lacks the totally out-there oddness of the director’s earlier works and the richness of his latter films, it is an intelligent and darkly funny film (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
AV Club
"The Greek freak is back with the kind of movie it feels perverse to say you “enjoy”"
Canada
Screen Rant
"Despite its length, 'Kinds of Kindness' offers a unique and uncomfortable look at the pursuit of love and acceptance (...) Rating: ★★★½ (out of 5)"
