The Hollywood Reporter
"[It] delivers enough emotional resolution to satisfy mainstream audiences (...) This is probably the best film the director has made for cinemas in the nearly quarter-century since 'Wag the Dog'."
United States
Variety
"The pieces don’t always mesh, and there are patchy and prosaic moments, but this is still Levinson’s strongest work in years"
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"An earnest, sometimes stolid biopic which is nonetheless hard to shake (...) Foster’s tortured portrayal is unflinching."
United States
IndieWire
"[A] clumsy biopic (...) Foster’s performance is ultimately the only thing that holds 'The Survivor' together across its three parallel timelines"
United States
The Wrap
"A haunted Ben Foster dominates real-life drama (...) Barry Levinson most substantial film in years"
United States
rogerebert.com
"'The Survivor' unfolds with almost zero artistry, telling a true story that has inherent power but doing it with an alarming lack of subtlety and nuance, almost as if it’s going for [the Oscar] instead of a greater art"
United States
Deadline
"Levinson smartly employs a non-linear approach (...) Haft’s story will move audiences and is worth telling (...) Shot largely in Budapest the film looks very good"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"Ben Foster gives a committed performance (...) in a derivative yet confident film (...) A decent and honourably intended picture (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
