Cinematographic movement that emerged in Brazil in the late 1950s, strongly influenced by Italian neorealism and by the French 'Nouvelle Vague', which had also recently emerged in those years. It lasted until the early 1970s and was characterised by showing the social reality of Brazil at the time, in its interest in authenticity and the reflection of problems as opposed to the dominant 'escapist cinema' of Hollywood.
