Subgenre of 'crime' cinema - films about crimes - specific to Germany, which originally referred to the films produced by the production company Rialto Film - a company born in Denmark - between 1959 and 1972 and which were mainly German adaptations of novels by Edgar Wallace and his brother Bryan Edgar Wallace. The term 'krimi' comes from the abbreviation of the German Kriminalfilm, more specifically from the kriminalroman (crime novel). By extension, all German crime/police genre films from the 60s are called krimis.
