Nick Nolte received an Oscar® nod for his heartbreaking turn in this sporting saga, a masculine melodrama of the highest order. Director Gavin O’Connor and his leading men excel at the mixed-martial-arts spectacle, though it’s intimate moments outside the ring that pack the biggest emotional punch.
