- Synopsis
- In 1953 London, concert pianist Joyce Hatto met aspiring impresario William Barrington-Coupe (“Barrie”). This well-meaning wideboy vowed to make her a star but, owing to her stage fright, their high hopes came to nothing. Fifty years later, they were retired and living in a Home Counties cul-de-sac – but when Joyce was stricken by cancer, Barrie was moved to attempt a second shot at fame. He released other pianists’ recordings under Joyce’s name and internet “Hatto-mania” saw her hailed as a lost genius. “Hertfordshire’s Bonnie and Clyde”, as Joyce called them, pulled off the biggest hoax in classical music history.
