Synopsis
Since its tomb, with the Lachaise Father, the voice of Gertrude Stein tells her American childhood and its adolescence, then its arrival in Paris, in 1904, at the 30 years age. Alice Toklas, her partner of a whole life, continues the account of the events which they lived together. Close friends of Picasso, Apollinaire, Matisse and so much of others, the two women lived (conjugally) the most upset times richest and century. Return to the Lachaise Father: the voice of Gertrude Stein speaks about the writing, death, then is keep silent.

Largely ignored in comparison with the importance of its work, Gertrude Stein is, today still, especially known for its talents of collector: it was one of very first to buy works of Picasso, Matisse, and other young painters of the beginning of the 20th century. Also known for its artistic friendships with Picasso, Matisse, Directs, Apollinaire, Satie, Man Ray, Cocteau, and Duchamp, it acquired a late and sudden notoriety, at the sixty years age, thanks to its first book of memories: The autobiography of Alice Toklas. The work, written in six weeks in what it invited its “style to do of the money”, was large a best to saddle the Thirties.

The film however sticks to privilege the aspect, less known, and by far most important of the life of Gertrude Stein, who is her literary adventure. Gertrude Stein indeed wrote an incredible quantity of novels, parts, poems, operas, ballets, portraits, news, scenarios of films, books police or for children, renewing each time the kind to which it was tested.

Independent of any current and all “artistic school”, it is not exaggerated to say of its literary company which it was located, and is located still today for us, with the avant-garde of the avant-gardes, while remaining of an incredible drollness and an astonishing simplicity.
