- When Private Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) is transferred to Hawaii, Captain Holmes (Philip Ober) finds out about Prewitt’s boxing abilities and tries to coax him to join the team. Prewitt refuses, insisting his boxing days are behind him, but his refusal makes him a target. His friend Maggio (Frank Sinatra) wants to help him, but he does have his own problems too. In the meantime, Sergeant Milton Warden (Burt Lancaster) and Holmes’ wife (Deborah Kerr), who is also mistreated by the captain, find they have a mutual attraction, and they begin an adulterous affair.
