Synopsis
A comic strip as harmless as Archie is easy to mock, even if its middle tone humor, between the absurd and the commonplace, was, to many, a bridge between the puerile and the adult. It’s harder to understand why it was such a huge hit in the US. Gerald Peary is a film critic, a documentarian, and was –and still is– a fan of the redhead teen and his friends in a semi-eternal high school. The film narrates how he came to discover what the real model for the small town of Riverdale and its inhabitants was, but also tells of something much more interesting: how those models are no more than a cover-up for another story. On his way, he will find the real Betty (remember? Archie loves rich girl Veronica and is loved by her blonde neighbor Betty) and another story will arise, one of a romanticism that is almost impossible in the vertiginous 20?th century. Incidentally, perhaps without even noticing, the film shows how a myth comes to life, and how the old idea of “finding the real reference” is just stupid. (BAFICI)
