Genie Awards were given out to recognize the best of Canadian cinema and TV by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. From 1949–1979, the awards were named the Canadian Film Awards. In 1980 they were renamed The Genie Awards.
Since 2013 they are named Canadian Screen Awards, since the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television announced in 2012 to merge its formerly separate Genie Awards (for film) and Gemini Awards (for television) into a single ceremony.
