After leaving her daughter in a small town in Pernambuco to be raised by relatives, Val spends the next 13 years working as a nanny and live-in housekeeper to a family in São Paulo. She has financial stability but has to live with the guilt of having not raised Jessica herself. When Jessica is nearing eighteen, however, Val believes she is being given a second chance when she receives a call from her. Jessica is coming to São Paulo to study for her college entrance exams. Filled with joy as well as apprehension and with the wholehearted support of her employers, Val prepares herself for the long-awaited moment of being near her daughter again. But when Jessica arrives, tensions begin to rise when it’s made clear that the household’s unspoken class barriers won’t be observed.
