"[It] suffers from a turgid script and bears all the signs of edit-suite triage to produce a still-incoherent 95 minutes (...) It’s hard to muster much engagement with characters who are so sketchily drawn."  NEG

"The film is not a great success. Too many screens of blinding lights. Too many transitions for their own sake. Abrupt changes of tone. And yet I believe we have not seen the real film (…) Rating: ★★½ (out of 4)"  NEU

"There is a strange deadness in the film, together with a callow self-importance and self-pity which become more stultifying with every minute that passes (…) Rating: ★ (out of 5)"  NEG

"At heart, this is a simple Zen fable about love and death. In execution, it's a complex and gorgeous mini-epic with sterling performances from its two stars (…) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"  POS

"Aronofsky can achieve an eloquence that suggests a blend of Andrei Tarkovsky (...) and comic books. But his commitment to conveying meaning and emotion through painstakingly constructed images also gives the movie a static, claustrophobic atmosphere."  NEU

"The film’s trippy melodrama is, at its core, an intensely grandiose and sincere rumination on the nature of love as the universe’s only eternal element (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 4)"  POS

"In telling a tale of love across time, Aronofsky is sometimes guilty of creating arty, pretentious psychobabble. But in visual terms, he's trying to expose his own raw, romantic heart (…) Rating: ★★½ (out of 4)"  NEU

"If the scenes of the 21st-century Jackman and Weisz didn't play out so movingly, 'The Fountain' might exist solely in the realm of symbols and ideas. Their flesh, blood, and tears (and more tears) keep it grounded"  POS

"Jackman finds the damn thing—the absolute, that is. And finding it ruins everything (...) 'The Fountain' is the story of a gifted artist who dared to reach for the stars and paid for his ambition with a really stupid movie."  NEG

"The filmmaker is enthralled by texture. 'The Fountain' often looks like velvet feels (...) I’m perfectly content to float with him even if he doesn’t solve the riddles of the universe."  POS
