The Eternal Breasts (1955)Publish Date:Kinuyo Tanaka was an acclaimed and prolific actress, best known as the star of several of Kenji Mizoguchi's masterpieces. Despite Mizoguchi's opposition, in 1953 she became the second female director in the history of Japanese cinema. "The Eternal Breasts', based on the true story of the contemporary poet Fumiko Nakajo, is the best known of her six films, in which she explored themes or used approaches close to the female universe. The film, very advanced for its time, deals with the consequences of breast cancer on a restless, non-conformist woman, with a combination of sensitivity and character reminiscent of Mizoguchi himself, but with a particular talent when it comes to capture the psychology of the female protagonist.
