Synopsis

Balnaird House, one of the most splendid estates in the Scottish Highlands, is the home of the ancient and venerable Aird family – and of a dark family secret: when the American businessman Conrad Tucker discovers a photo of Laura Aird, the family's youngest daughter, in a magazine, his past suddenly returns to haunt him… Could it be that Laura is the fruit of his affair with the attractive Virginia Aird? He vows to learn the truth. Meanwhile, Laura meets and falls in love with the attractive Guy while she is studying in Oxford.

Conrad's investigations also lead him to the Balmerinos, long-standing friends and neighbors of the Aird family. Pleased with the successful renovation of their homestead and the long-awaited return of their widely-traveled son Hamish, Archie and Isobel Balmerino plan to give a traditional September Ball. Edmund Aird, who is troubled by an extremely important business deal as well as by the arrangement of his succession, suffers a heart attack. Though he is more aware than ever of the importance of making this decision, he finds it impossible to choose between his son Henry or Noel, his daughter Alexa's ambitious husband. When Noel inadvertently hears about Conrad's suspicion, he forges a diabolical plan to cheat Henry out of the succession. Meanwhile, Laura and Guy are celebrating the engagement of Henry and Emily. Little do they know that these are the last hours they will spend together before fate deals them a cruel blow.
