- Cosponsored by the Conflict Prevention Project, Middle East Project and the Asia Program this timely documentary entitled, Jung (War): In the Land of the Mujaheddin. Takes a unique look into the war torn country of Afghanistan. Shot in 1999 and 2000 in the northeast mountains of Afghanistan (an area under the tenuous control of the Northern Alliance), the film chronicles the efforts of a surgeon and war correspondent, and their Italian NGO, Emergency, as they attempt to set up a hospital for war victims. Winner of the Nestor Almendros Prize of the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival 2001. The film offers an unflinching look at the brutalities of war and the devastation wrought on civilians by mine explosions, forced displacement and loss of innocent life. Commentators Peter Bergen and Zohra Rasekh discussed the film peripherally, focusing instead on questions raised from the audience as to the brutality of the Taliban regime versus the past wrongdoings of the Northern Alliance, the prospects for peace in the region, and the international support for a new government.
