- Synopsis
- This film was inspired by the novel Stella Dallas by Olive Higgins Prouty and was initially released in two parts, respectively in 79 minutes and 70 minutes of length. They were combined into one 91-minute film and re-released in 1950. An uneducated mother ends up leaving her daughter for the latter's sake. With the man of the family promoted and coming into some money the couple enroll their only daughter into a higher end school leading to the family meeting and socializing with upper class ladies and families. The mother attempts to act like a lady and be sophisticated, but is ultimately looked down upon and bullied. Simultaneously, the husband meets his old flame who is beautiful and a pianist now. The man harbours feelings for his ex.
