Synopsis

Crimecomedy based on the true case of Vincenzo Peruggia, who stole the Mona Lisa in 1911: Peruggia steals the famous painting in order to impress the roommaid Mathilde, which is waiting for something big to happen in her life. When Mathilde suddenly runs away with someone else, embarassed Peruggia tries to give the painting as a present to the Italian state and gets busted. During his trial Mathilde visits Florence, in order to benefit from Peruggia's new prominence, but when he reckons her, he states, that he only stole the painting in revenge of all the art that had been stolen by Napoleon...

(btw, in the real story, Peruggia stole the Mona Lisa most likely really only in order to bring her back to Italy. He hid the painting two years in his flat, until he was cought when he tried to give it to an art dealer in Florence. His sentence of one year was in second instance reduced to 7 months. He was considered an Italian hero.)
