- Synopsis
- McGregor stars in this tepid thriller as a law student moonlighting as a security guard at a morgue. Meanwhile, a vicious serial killer is prowling the city, preying on prostitutes, whose bodies keep crowding the morgue. Is McGregor the killer? Is it the slightly loopy former security guard? Or Ewan's amoral, thrill-seeking best friend? How about the creepy cop on the case? The answer, unfortunately, is fairly obvious and uninspired. Director Bornedal (who cowrote with Steven Soderbergh) here remakes his own overrated 1994 Danish chiller Nattevagten, and sadly, delivers a carbon copy of that film, carrying its same flaws -- an illogical plot, a slack pace, and most damaging, extremely unlikable characters and needlessly unpleasant situations.
- Critics' reviews
-
-
"Nightwatch is more stylish and well-plotted than your typical slasher film, but it doesn't quite stand out in a world where the horrific has become routine"
-
"It's a visually effective and often scary film to watch, but the story is so leaky that we finally just give up"
-
"Nightwatch is a horror for reasons that have nothing to do with suspenseful moviemaking"
-
"The new outing has been physically enhanced with American production values and a marquee cast, but much of the earlier film's humanity and mordant humor have been lost in translation"
-
"If not for Bornedal's stylish approach to the material and a couple of effectively chilling sequences, Nightwatch would have been a complete waste of time and effort."
