- Deschanel is Reese Holden, a young actress working in New York's experimental theatre scene. After a performance, she is approached by a motherly but aggressive publisher (Madigan) who will pay a fortune for love letters exchanged between Reese's mother and father. Her parents, it seems, are lions of American literature and their correspondence is a holy grail to scholars. Her mother has recently passed away and her father has become an eccentric recluse, holed up in a Michigan farmhouse. Unhappy in love and adrift professionally, Reese decides to go home for the first time since her mother's death. There she encounters a former grad student (Amelia Warner) and a rock musician caretaker (Ferrell), who have become a bizarre surrogate family for her ailing, withdrawn father (Harris). Confronting strong feelings about her parents' neglect and the strange coterie now occupying her house, she is forced into an emotional reconciliation with her past.
