Mani, a master’s student, returns to the region north of Quebec where she grew up. Her painful past resurfaces. Determined to make a place for herself, she enters the debate over a referendum on the free sale of alcohol. Laura, a bootlegger, pockets her profits under the protection of the group council and her husband, Raymond, who still holds her responsible for their daughter’s death in a fire. Two radically opposed women rapidly divide the community into two clans who find themselves face-to-face trying to determine the best path towards independence.
