Okay, this is a good movie, better than just okay, but I can't in good conscience give it a four-star review. First, the good parts. The music is top-notch, the songs are amazing and the story definitely hits the emotional keys its going for. It has an amazing first act, which leads to a very soggy middle though, getting caught up in a mystery that really didn't need as much focus placed on it as there was. It has big ideas but approaches them ham-fistedly. A lot of the emotional issues are dealt with incorrectly and the expected actions you'd see from people with these issues and their eventual 'fixed' conclusion are accelerated and some of the actual consequences seem to be ignored; it seems to focus more on what the story needs from them than what they brought to the story. There are extra characters which could have been removed without any harm to the story as well. This all leads to a conclusion that feels a little too forced and disjointed, even if the beats that we needed for an emotional payoff were hit. Also, there is no significant conclusion to the 'beast' storyline. The threat is still there, even if it has been delayed. All in all, a good story... it just needed a lot more polish and editing. If there is ever an expanded version done, I think that might help, since it feels like a lot was left on the cutting room floor.
