About this movie

Based on a true story, when Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, facing international pressure, calls for a referendum on his presidency in 1988, opposition leaders persuade a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra, to spearhead their campaign. With scant resources and constant scrutiny by the despot's watchmen, Saavedra and his team devise an audacious plan to win the election and free their country from oppression.

One part reenactment, one part dramatic license, the powerful social and political forces underlying the fall of Augusto Pinochet are an undercurrent for most of the movie, giving a sense of tension without overselling the realities it portrays. True to the imagery and culture of its period, much of the broadcast material will seem goofy to outsiders and in retrospect, but NO succeeds in portraying the human element of an important chapter in Chilean history.

An interesting look at one of the most brutal periods in history. Shows how the people of Chile, without a full blown revolution, voted out a dictator. The only country in history to do so.
