About this movie

An Australian animated film based on the novel by John Gardiner. Completed in 1980 by Alexander Stitt, (award-winning creator of the iconic Life. Be In It and Slip, Slop, Slap campaigns), this cult tale is a part re-telling of the epic poem Beowulf, told from the perspective of the great monster, Grendel. Revisionist in part, it presents the other side of the story - the tale of a contemplative monster desperate to find meaning in life. Encountering a fearsome dragon, Grendel must face the possibility that his sole purpose in life is to terrify humanity and leave behind a legacy of destruction and evil. 1981 TVW Enterprises

This was one of the films that really stuck with me as a kid for years and years to come. This film teaches kids about prejudice and fitting in, from the perspective of those hurt by it. Peter Ustinov does a magical, downplayed job of drawing you in to Grendel's internal turmoil with having to be the monster in a world not willing to accept anything less.
