About this movie

Adapted by Tama Janowitz from her best-selling novel, Slaves of New York is a caustic, comic portrait of Manhattan's bohemian art scene, complete with an eclectic ensemble of artists struggling to succeed at their work and love lives. Eleanor (Bernadette Peters) is an aspiring hat designer desperately seeking a "normal" life in the casually cruel, concrete world of New York City. Stuck in an unfulfilling relationship with a narcissistic pop-artist, Eleanor sets out on a tentative journey of self-discovery. From one ramshackle SoHo loft to the next, Eleanor gamely endures an assortment of hilariously disastrous encounters with pretentious performance artists and social climbing fashion seers, only to be caught off avant-garde by her own growing sense of confidence and self-esteem.
