A young English writer, exploring the hedonism of 1930's Berlin, becomes involved with a joyfully amoral nightclub singer. The extravagant thoughtlessness of their world, with its champagne and caviar, parties and love affairs, contrasts with the violence and prejudice overtaking Germany as the Nazis begin their ominous rise to power. But the writer finds he cannot ignore that reality, as he sees friends victimized by the Nazi regime and his relationship crumbling in the general decadence and chaos gripping the city in the last days before the war.
