| SYNOPSIS/PLOT |
With the help of his mentor, a slave-turned-bounty hunter sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner. In the American South, two years before The Civil War begins, a slave named Django (Jamie Foxx) is set free by Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) a German bounty hunter so he can help track down some criminal brothers/slavers who had owned him previously. After their initial team-up, the new friends continue to ride along together during which Dr. Schultz teaches Django how to be a proficient professional outlaw catcher and deadly pistoleer. When Schultz later learns of Django's estranged slave wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), who was sold off to a wealthy plantation owner named Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), the two men hatch a plan to infiltrate Candie's estate and rescue her. |
| PRO REVIEWS |
----------------------------------------
"Tarantino injects the weighty material with so many jocular, startling and unexpected touches that it's constantly stimulating" (Todd McCarthy: The Hollywood Reporter)
----------------------------------------
"I can only say Django delivers, wholesale, that particular narcotic and delirious pleasure that Tarantino still knows how to confect in the cinema (...) It's as unwholesome, deplorable and delicious as a forbidden cigarette (...) Rating: ***** (out of five)" (Peter Bradshaw: The Guardian)
----------------------------------------
"A jolt of pure cinema, dazzling, disreputable and thrillingly alive (...) Is 'Django Unchained' too much? Damn straight. It wouldn't be Tarantino otherwise (...) Rating: ***1/2 (out of four)"
(Peter Travers: Rolling Stone)
----------------------------------------
"An immensely satisfying taste of antebellum empowerment packaged as spaghetti-Western homage (...) Once again, Quentin Tarantino rides to the Weinsteins' rescue, delivering a bloody hilarious (and hilariously bloody) Christmas counter-programmer" (Peter Debruge: Variety)
----------------------------------------
"Another strong, sparky and bloody entry in the QT canon. (...) Rating: **** (out of five)" (Dan Jolin: Empire)
----------------------------------------
"'Django Unchained' (...) is exactly what you might expect from the fearless, controversial director of Pulp Fiction—it’s overlong, raunchy, shocking, grim, exaggerated (...) you won’t see anything else quite like it" (Rex Reed: The New York Observer)
----------------------------------------
"The film offers one sensational sequence after another (...) This is a brilliant entertainment (...) Yes, had I not been prevented from seeing it sooner because of an injury, this would have been on my year's best films list. (...) Rating: **** (out of four)" (Roger Ebert: Chicago Sun-Times)
