Taipei is besieged by a drought so extreme, citizens have taken to drinking watermelon juice and bathing in rooftop reservoirs. In its scarcity, the value of water is absurdly apportioned: lovers pledge affection with gifts of melons, and the pornography industry gets creatively, hilariously wet. Director Tsai Ming-liang has resurrected familiar characters from 2001’s What Time Is It There? in this quiet, vivid love story which he slowly unfolds through lingering static shots and characteristic contemplative artiness. A fair dose of homoerotic campiness lightens this dark and slightly gruesome tale and musical interludes segment the film, complete with sequined costumes and sensual choreography. Its explicit sexual nature is laced with copious amounts of dark humor.
