During the time of WWII, U.S. soldiers who are about to be executed, are offered a chance at reprieve. It all begins in German-occupied France, where Shoshanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema. Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as "The Basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own...
PRO REVIEWS
----------------------------------------
"From the moment charming, smiling, laughing Nazi [Waltz] (...) sweeps onto the screen, he owns this film even more than its maker. (...) rarely has one of his movies felt as interminable as this one" (Manohla Dargis: The New York Times) ----------------------------------------
"A surprisingly tame war movie (...) The film is by no means terrible but those things we think of as being Tarantino-esque, the long stretches of wickedly funny dialogue, the humor in the violence and outsized characters strutting across the screen, are largely missing." (Kirk Honeycutt: The Hollywood Reporter) ----------------------------------------
"To hell with the history books, this is Tarantino's own war. (...) a big, bold, audacious war movie (...) Rating: **** (out of four)." (Roger Ebert: Chicago Sun-Times) ----------------------------------------
"Eye-catching (...) Once again, the US director has blurred film genres. (...) Tarantino has made a glorious, silly, blood-spattered return." (Emma Jones: BBC News) ----------------------------------------
"It's rather brilliant. Every bit as idiosyncratic as the spelling of its title, it's a wonderfully-acted movie that subverts expectation at every turn. And it may represent the most confident, audacious writing and directing of QT's career." (Chris Hewitt: Empire) ----------------------------------------
"Tarantino rewrites history with the only authority he has: his sovereignty as a filmmaker. Will Basterds polarize audiences? That's a given. But for anyone professing true movie love, there's no resisting it. (...) Rating: *** (out of four)." (Peter Travers: Rolling Stone) ----------------------------------------
"Is not boring, but it’s ridiculous and appallingly insensitive (...) The film is skillfully made, but it’s too silly to be enjoyed, even as a joke." (David Denby: The New Yorker) ----------------------------------------
