SYNOPSIS/PLOT Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) is a 15-year-old boy with two objectives: To lose his virginity before his next birthday, and to stop his mother from leaving his father for her dance teacher. Meet Oliver, a precocious 15-year-old whose worldview is exceedingly clever and largely delusional (he imagines the outpouring of grief that would spread through Wales if he died). Oliver carries a briefcase, doesn’t agree with everything Nietzsche said but concedes that he had some interesting points, peruses the dictionary for new words (fla•gi•tious, adj, wickedly shameful), and suspects his mother of having an affair with their New Age neighbor. But foremost on Oliver’s mind is finding a girlfriend. Enter Jordana Bevan.
PRO REVIEWS ----------------------------------------
"Ayoade, the British comic making a remarkable feature debut with his adaptation of Joe Dunthorne's 2008 novel, blends mirth and malice with deadpan brilliance (...) Rating: *** (out of four)" (Peter Travers: Rolling Stone)
----------------------------------------
"Significance can be overrated, and “Submarine” makes the most of its whimsical triviality (...) At moments he approaches the mordant, heady sense of the sorrows and freedoms of youth captured by François Truffaut in 'The 400 Blows'" (A. O. Scott: The New York Times)
----------------------------------------
"The director self-indulges in cinematic art, drowning the whole thing in freeze frames, slow-motion and color-coding, owing everything he knows to the worst of Jean-Luc Godard and Wes Anderson" (Rex Reed: The New York Observer)
----------------------------------------
"'Submarine' is one of a kind" (Joe Morgenstern: The Wall Street Journal)
