GENRE Thriller | Politics
SYNOPSIS/PLOT A contemporary version of Shakespeare's dangerous political thriller. The citizens of Rome are hungry. Coriolanus, the hero of Rome, a great soldier and a man of inflexible self-belief despises the people. His extreme views ignite a mass riot. Rome is bloody. Manipulated and out-manoeuvred by politicians and even his own mother Volumnia, Coriolanus is banished from Rome. He offers his life or his services to his sworn enemy Tullus Aufidius. Coriolanus and Aufidius march on Rome intending to destroy the city. Volumnia appeals to her son. He tries to reject her but eventually breaks. Aufidius, feeling bitterly betrayed, brutally murders Coriolanus.
PRO REVIEWS ----------------------------------------
"Exciting, ironic, with assured direction, accomplished performances and the tension of topical themes, this is Shakespeare as relevant as you like it. (...) Rating: **** (out of five)" (Angie Errigo: Empire)
----------------------------------------
"Purists may holler that Fiennes and screenwriter John Logan have cut the Bard's second-longest play into two tense hours onscreen, but the power of the piece is undeniable (...) Rating: ***1/2 (out of four)" (Peter Travers: Rolling Stone)
----------------------------------------
"Fiennes and Logan haven't made a definitive Coriolanus, but they've made a sensationally gripping one (...) Brian Cox gives a superb performance" (David Edelstein: New York Magazine)
----------------------------------------
"'Coriolanus' could easily pass for the work of an accomplished master, and though the storytelling lends itself to easy confusion (owing more to the source material than to the execution), the emotional impact reads loud and clear" (Peter Debruge: Variety)
----------------------------------------
"Ralph Fiennes directs and stars in Coriolanus as William Shakespeare's Rambo in a production that delivers heavyweight screen acting at its best" (Ray Bennett: The Hollywood Reporter)
