| SYNOPSIS/PLOT |
Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg) long ago gave up his life of crime, but after his brother-in-law, Andy (Caleb Landry Jones), messes up a drug deal for his sadistic boss, Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi), Chris finds he has to slip back into his old ways—running contraband—to help Andy out of a sticky situation. Chris quickly gets a team together with his best friend, Sebastian's (Ben Foster) help, for a run to Panama, hoping to return with millions in counterfeit bills. When things go wrong, as time to reach the cash is quickly running out, Chris has to put his rusty skills to use in order to successfully navigate a treacherous criminal network of brutal drug lords, cops and hit men before his wife, Kate (Kate Beckinsale), and sons become targets. |
| PRO REVIEWS |
----------------------------------------
"It's a genre film, not great art (...) but it's a thoroughly satisfying entertainment, and, in this season of lowered expectations, a nice surprise" (Joe Morgenstern: The Wall Street Journal)
----------------------------------------
"Contraband, while often grungy and far-fetched, does keep you watching. And in January, that's recommendation enough" (Owen Gleiberman: Entertainment Weekly)
----------------------------------------
"Contraband (...) goes down in a sea of Hollywood clichés (...) Wahlberg could sleepwalk through this role, and does (...) Rating: ** (out of four)"
(Peter Travers: Rolling Stone)
----------------------------------------
"Contraband" aims to be dumb fun but gets only the first half right (...) Rating: 1/2 (out of four)" (Kyle Smith: New York Post)
----------------------------------------
"This solid if disposable genre exercise maintains a hard-driving line of action and a commitment to one-damned-thing-after-another storytelling that carries it past any number of narrative speedbumps and preposterous detours" (Justin Chang: Variety)
