- Synopsis
- Biography of Dolly Payne (Ginger Rogers), the wife of James Madison, the fourth President of the United States. Dolly is courted by two political leaders: Madison (Burgess Meredith) and Aaron Burr (David Niven). She flirts with both of them, even confronting them, not only for sentimental reasons, but because she wants to contribute to the building of the country. After exerting her influence over Burr, she will help Thomas Jefferson become president of the United States (1801-1809). When Madison (1809-1817) wins the presidential election, she becomes the First Lady.
