- Synopsis
- Adapted from Hjalmar Soderberg's 1919 play of the same title, GERTRUD tells the tale of a woman's search for idealized love and spiritual fulfillment, which takes her beyond the confines of a passionless marriage through a series of affairs that tragically fail to live up to her expectations. Employing restrained direction, stark set design, and long, contemplative shots, Dreyer's swan song is a beautiful, meditative and haunting masterwork.
