SYNOPSIS/PLOT Frankie (Scoot McNairy) and Russell (Ben Mendelsohn), two not-too-bright ex-cons, are hired by John "The Squirrel" Amato to disrupt a high-stakes backroom poker game, rob the players and frame someone else for the job. That someone else is the card game's manager Markie Trattman (Ray Liotta), who's suspected of staging a previous poker robbery. Unfortunately, the game was under the protection of the mob, whose lawyer (Richard Jenkins) is ordered to find those responsible and take care of them. He hires hitman Jackie Cogan (Brad Pitt) to track down the small-time punks.
PRO REVIEWS ----------------------------------------
"'In Killing Them Softly', Dominik's first feature since 'The Assassination of Jesse James', Pitt once again plays a quietly powerful sociopath, and once again the screen vibrates" (Owen Gleiberman: Entertainment Weekly)
----------------------------------------
"A genre film — a timid, subpar grafting of the immortal 'Pulp Fiction' — with art-house pretensions (...) the only thing that truly rewards your attendance is Pitt in another effortless star performance" (Richard Corliss: Time)
----------------------------------------
"A juicy, bloody, grimy and profane crime drama (...) The film is terribly smart in every respect, with ne’er-a-false note performances and superb craft work from top to bottom" (Todd McCarthy: The Hollywood Reporter)
----------------------------------------
"Languorous to the point of rambling, the story of double-crossing and vengeance is darkly funny, graphically violent and gorgeously shot (...) Rating: *** (out of four)" (Claudia Puig: USA Today)
----------------------------------------
"It seems as if I've been seeing versions of this story since forever (...) The charisma of such actors as Gandolfini, Pitt, Liotta and Jenkins depends largely on their screen presences and our memories of them in better roles (...) Rating: ** (out of four)" (Roger Ebert: Chicago Sun-Times)
